gaudete, christus est natus! (international christmas songs, part 1)

about 15 years ago, my dad signed me up for the innsbrucker capellknaben boys’ choir, and i quickly grew fond of singing.
in 1996, we went on a concert tour to athens, greece with the choir, and we in our repertoire was classical as well as traditional austrian music, but also some international christmas songs and carols.

i’m not sure what prompted me, but i’ve recently been looking up these christmas songs, and have been trying to find recordings/videos.
over the next few days, i’m going to post the ones that i was able to find.

gaudete – christmas song from the middle ages (16th century)
performed by the king’s singers

[ad#center] you can find the sheet music at choir anthems and arrangements by david lee. gaudete is number 7 from the top.

here’s a copy of the lyrics and a translation, taken from wikipedia:

Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus

Ref.: Gaudete, gaudete!
Christus est natus
ex Maria virgine.
Gaudete!

Tempus adest gratiae,
hoc quod optabamus;
carmina laetitiae
devote reddamus.

(Ref.)

Deus homo factus est,
natura mirante;
mundus renovatus est
a Christo regnante.

(Ref.)

Ezecaelis porta
clausa per transitur;
unde lus ext orta,
salus invenitur.

(Ref.)

Ergo nostra contio
psallat iam in lustro;
Benedicat Domino:
Salus regi nostro.

Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born

Ref.: Rejoice, rejoice!
Christ is born
Of the Virgin Mary,
rejoice!

The time of grace has come
That we have desired;
Let us devoutly return
Joyful verses.

(Ref.)

God has become man,
And nature marvels;
The world has been renewed
By Christ who is King.

(Ref.)

The closed gate of Ezechiel
Has been passed through;
Whence the light is born,
Salvation is found.

(Ref.)

Therefore let our song
Now be sung in brightness
Let it give praise to the Lord:
Greeting to our King.
